Families often use the phrases home care and home health care as if they mean the same thing. They are related, but they are not the same service.
Understanding the difference helps you call the right provider and ask better questions.
What Home Care Usually Means
Home care usually means non-medical support with everyday life at home. It can include:
- Bathing, grooming, dressing, and hygiene
- Toileting and incontinence support
- Companionship and supervision
- Meal preparation and hydration reminders
- Light housekeeping and laundry
- Walking support and safer transfers
- Medication reminders, not medication administration
The goal is to help someone stay safer, cleaner, fed, engaged, and supported at home.
What Home Health Care Usually Means
Home health care usually involves skilled medical services ordered or directed by a clinician. It may include:
- Skilled nursing
- Wound care
- Injections or medication administration
- Physical, occupational, or speech therapy
- Medical monitoring after an illness or surgery
These services are often short-term and tied to a medical need.
Many Families Need Both
A parent may receive home health visits for therapy after a hospital stay, but still need home care for bathing, meals, laundry, reminders, and safe movement around the house.
Home health may visit for a focused clinical task. Home care helps with the rest of the day.
Questions To Ask
Before hiring support, ask:
- Does my parent need medical care or daily living support?
- Who is allowed to perform the task we need?
- Is the need short-term, ongoing, or changing?
- What is family already doing that has become too much?
- Does the provider explain what they cannot do?
Clear boundaries are a good sign. A responsible home care agency should not promise skilled nursing if it is not providing skilled nursing.
